My bedroom carpet is original nylon from when the house was built, and the hallway is flat and gray. Is cleaning even worth it?

Usually yes, but let's be clear about what you'll get. A lot of West Hills homes still have cut-pile nylon from the original build or a 1990s replacement, and after that many years the traffic lanes down a hallway are physically worn. The fibers are crushed and abraded, not just dirty. Cleaning pulls out the decomposed granite grit and soil that's making it look gray, and nylon does recover some pile height with hot water extraction. What it won't do is rebuild fiber that's already worn off, and it won't bring back color in the faded band under a west-facing window. We'll tell you before we start which parts will look noticeably better and which are permanent.

What are those dark lines along my baseboards and under the bedroom doors?

Filtration soiling. Your forced-air system runs heat in winter and hard AC most of the summer, so air is moving through the house nearly year-round, and it gets pulled through the carpet edge at gaps under doors and where the carpet meets the baseboard. The fibers act as a filter and trap fine airborne particles. Out here on the chaparral edge that means brush dust, decomposed granite fines, and fall ash on top of normal cooking and candle soot. It's not a stain in the usual sense, it's embedded particulate. It responds to specific edge treatment and agitation rather than standard extraction. We can improve it substantially in most homes, but on lines that have built up over many years, expect real improvement rather than a clean edge.

We have dogs and there's urine soaked into the carpet. What's involved on a slab house?

This is the most common serious call we get in West Hills. With slab-on-grade and no basement, urine passes through the carpet and pad and sits on the concrete, where it wicks back up every time humidity rises. Surface cleaning alone will smell fine for a few days and then come back. We check the affected areas, and depending on how far it's gone we're either treating through the carpet and pad or pulling the carpet back in that section, treating the slab directly, and replacing pad where it's saturated. We'll show you what we find and give you the honest version. Sometimes the answer on a heavily used area is replacement, and we'd rather say so than take your money twice.

How long until we can walk on it and put the furniture back?

Most of the year, hours. Valley summer air is dry and warm, and with the AC running a normal whole-house extraction is walkable quickly and fully dry the same day. The exception is winter rain weeks. During those, door thresholds and the carpet along exterior walls hold moisture much longer, especially in the older single-story tracts where the slab edge and threshold are right at grade. On those jobs we use more air movement and will tell you specifically which edges need extra time before you set furniture back down.

How soon can you get out here, and can you ever do same day?

Same-day is sometimes possible, most often when a morning job finishes early or someone cancels. Call and ask rather than assuming. For a scheduled whole-house clean, we're usually out within a few days. Pet urine and anything actively wet we prioritize, because the longer it sits on the slab the deeper it goes. On cost, we don't quote by phone sight unseen. We come out, look at the actual carpet, and give you a free estimate and a firm price before anything starts. What moves the number is square footage, how many rooms have worn traffic lanes needing extra work, whether we're doing edge treatment for filtration lines, whether there are stairs to the second floor in the newer hillside homes, and how much urine treatment is involved. No surprises added after the fact.
