Partly, and it's the most common question we get here. On the two-story plans built through the 1990s and 2000s, the stairs and the upstairs traffic lane take nearly all the foot traffic in the house. Cleaning removes the grit and lifts a lot of the crushing, especially on the stair nose where dirt packs in. What it can't undo is abrasion, meaning fiber that's already been scuffed dull. We'll tell you which of the two you're looking at before we start, because it changes what you should expect. Stairs take longer than the same square footage of open bedroom floor, and we clean them by hand at the edges and nose.

How much dust are we talking about? My house is closed up most of the time.

More than most people expect.
