1. The wall-to-wall in our older canyon place is worn and smells musty. Is cleaning still worth doing, or are we past that?

   Usually it's still worth a cleaning first. Most of what looks like wear in Topanga homes is decomposed granite and trail dust ground down into the base of the pile, plus dulling from years of foot traffic. That comes out, and the carpet looks noticeably better. What cleaning can't fix is backing that's delaminating, seams coming apart, or pile that's matted flat with no fiber left. Musty odor depends on the source: if it's soil and pet traffic held in the fibers, treatment handles it; if moisture is coming up from a crawlspace or a damp slab, the smell returns until that's addressed. We'll tell you honestly which one you have before we quote anything.

2. How long will it take to dry here in the canyon, and can it be sped up?

   Longer than it would down on the coast flats, and we plan for that. Canyon shade, creek-corridor dampness and marine air pushing up from the ocean all slow evaporation, and rooms built over a crawlspace or sitting low on the lot are the slowest. We use as little moisture as the soil level allows, extract heavily on the final passes, and bring air movers to keep the carpet from sitting damp. That's the part that causes musty odor to come back. On a mild day with airflow through the house, most rooms are dry the same day. Damp low-lying rooms and heavy winter-rain mud cleanups can take longer, and we'll say so up front.
