Yes, and it's most of what we do in Agoura Hills. Sharp mineral grit sits down in the base of the pile and abrades the fiber, so the lane goes dull and flat even after it's been cleaned. The fix is thorough dry soil removal before any water touches it, then hot water extraction with enough passes to pull the grit out rather than just wet it. If the fiber is already abraded from years of it, cleaning will improve the color but won't put the twist back.

There's a dog urine spot in an upstairs bedroom. Does it matter that it's not on a slab?

It matters a lot. Downstairs on slab, urine tends to pool at the concrete and can often be flushed and treated in place. Upstairs it goes through the carpet into the pad and then into the subfloor and can wick down the seams, so surface cleaning alone won't stop the odor. We check with a moisture meter and light to find the real extent, which is almost always bigger than the visible stain. Depending on what we find, the honest answer may be sub-surface flushing and treatment, or lifting the carpet in that area to treat the pad and subfloor. We'll say which before we start.
